The New Chartists Alliance
Established in Oldham, the New Chartists Alliance (NCA) is a political movement formed by a co-operative of independent politicians, radical thinkers and the working class descendants of the original Chartists. Our primary purpose is to restore trust in the democratic processes through which our civic institutions are run.
If you’re fed up of a corrupt Council led by an even more corrupt group of Councillors join us. If you’ve had enough of cover up after cover up join us. If you’ve decided that the politicians in charge are just using you as a pawn in their games join us.
We are now looking to grow our team of CUSTODIANS. They will be tasked with identifying and supporting a team of Independent candidates that will stand for election. One vote at a time, one seat at a time, one ward at a time., one constituency at a time. We’re going to take back our town and we’re going to help others do the same.
Like the original Chartists, our Charter has six main elements through which we believe that democracy in towns like Oldham can be restored and people once again have trust in their Council.
Fight Electoral Fraud
We will introduce additional checks that help minimise electoral fraud including introducing safeguards against postal vote fraud and the influence of criminal Cartels. In Oldham over 25% of votes are cast by post and concerns of endemic fraud widespread.
Abolish the Cabinet System
As in Sheffield, we will call a referendum to switch to a committee system of decision-making. In town’s like Oldham, where the Labour Party control is absolute the existing Cabinet system is essentially a one party Dictatorship where the MP has too much influence.
Fight Corrupt Politicians
We will introduce a recall system through which politicians that have clearly brought the town in to disrepute can be recalled by the people of the town and a Council by-election called. This would put an end to criminal councillors remaining in position.
Reduce Number of Councillors
We will reduce the number of Councillors in each ward from three to two. Immediately, this would help bring balance to a one party town. It would also help ensure that mainstream political parties are forced to cull their corrupt and long in the tooth Councillors.
Fight Corrupt Officers
We will appoint a People’s Champion in the Council. With a suite of over arching powers, they would hold Senior Council Officers to account and ensure that Freedom of Information requests submitted by the public are treated with dignity.
Support Independents
At each election our team of Custodians will endorse a team of Independent candidates. We will do this at both Council elections and General Elections. Our candidates will be crowd funded. Once elected, they will contribute 33% of their allowance to support and train a new generation of politicians that put their communities first.
